What is Diabetic Eye Disease?

This type of eye disease may occur in people with diabetes as a complication of the disease.
All forms of diabetic eye diseases can cause severe vision loss or even blindness.

Diabetic eye disease may include:
Diabetic retinopathy--damage to the blood vessels in the retina.
Cataract--clouding of the eye's lens.
Glaucoma--increase in fluid pressure inside the eye that leads to optic nerve damage and loss of vision.

Cataract and glaucoma are eye diseases that also affect people who do not have diabetes.

The most common form of diabetic eye disease is Diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy, which is caused by changes in the retina's blood vessels, is the leading cause of blindness in American adults.
In some cases the blood vessels may swell and leak fluid, or abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina.
Such changes may result in severe vision loss or blindness.
